Has to be 80's (i.e. over 20 years old so I can get classic insurance)

I saw one competing in a sprint a few years ago – looks and sounds awesome. Quicker than the Pikes Peak quattro (although that was probably because of the tight circuit…)

Parents had a MG metro, grandad had a metro GTi, I'd be letting the side down if I didn't buy/build a 6r4.

Thats my justification for my latest man project/idea and I'm sticking to it!

Surely there is only one 80's hatchback worth considering

Think this is going in my RSS threads. 🙂 That Metro engine powered the Jag XJ220 IIRC, and the Integrale is just gorgeous even today.

I'm 23, plenty of time to save up 🙂

I'm waiting for someone to build a kit car version, surely theres as much market for that as the lancia wedge of cheese?

Did citoren ever make anything noteworth in that era? I presume the saxo was a re branded 106, so what was the equivalent 205 gti?

M8 used to have one (ex-Roger Clarke? rally car), and being as he scared me silly in his normal car, i'm so glad I never got a go in it (you needed ear defenders to ride in it).
As for insurance, apparently a auto-trader insurance policy is the way ahead to cover you for silliness.
Used to cost him £200 for a part worn tyre….their speciality was a figure of 8 burn out.

i think you'll find that the hot hatch thing was actually started by cars like these

    and

no they're not hatchbacks but they were the first of their kind and started the revolution that made cars what they are today.

I bet its bigger than zero, think how many cateram knocks off there are, theres already lancia stratos (alfa based) kits, rs200 kits (scooby based) and a few others, so theres obviously a big market for kit cars and a market within that for rally cars, and the 6r4 is just abous as iconic as they get (allong with original quatros, RS200s, delta integrales, stratos etc).

    In the meantime its a difficult decision;

    Which 80's hatch untill 106 rallye's become classics…………….

And JP15 or fisher fury for the weekend………….

That might explain why my mate crashed his twice, second time writting it off. Funnily enough on a fast corner. 😕
I guess I was a better driver than him as I never came close. 😉
Or was I just slow!! 😳

A mate used to have one of these back in the day. Its turbo was vicious. Mind you the 11 turbo was appalling for turbo lag!

Maybe not quite 80's, but an awesome car nonetheless…

If that doesn't tickle your fancy, how about the RS200?

Yup, RS200's got to be the best car so far on this list – although if you prefer your mid engined turbo rally cars a little more French, you could always have –

Personally, I don't see how a car designed purely for racing, and only ending up on the road for homologation purposes can count really? Moreover, hot hatches were meant to be "cheap" and cheerful, an everyman kind of sportscar if you like – stuff like the RS200 doesn't really fit that bill, does it?

Edit: loads of memories ^^ there:

Delta: Dad had one but not an Integrale 🙁
XR2: Bro had one – loved it
Golf Mk 1: I had one
Pug 205: I had one (see above)
Renault 5: Mate had one and scared the crop out of me 😯
Gordini: Saw a girl who had one for a while – she was a bit nuts but a great shog. Don't remember much about the car 😕
