    The vast majority of locomotives and railway wheels have tyres. Otherwise you’d have to scrap the whole axle and wheel assembly once the wheel had worn down to the minimum.

    They can get flat tyres as well. 😉
    If the brakes lock up it can put a flat spot on the tyre, which will then clank every time the wheel goes round.
