My mums moving to Fleetwood FY7 from down south.

Just wondering from any of the locals what’s life like around that area?

    Many thanks, Ben.

****. Hope she likes fresh fish and fisherman’s friends.
And pensioners, the place is full of pensioners. And traffic lights turning red for no earthly reason

I’ve had to spend some time there on and off for the last few years. It really is one of the worst places I’ve ever been. Not quite as bad as Basra in Iraq but not far off.

It’s worse now the ferry has stopped too. Just seems like one of those dead end towns that’s been left behind. Fishing industry died and nothing came in to replace it. All very sad & depressing.

Does it still have a ferry to Ireland? That was the best bit….

We have friends in Poulton le Fylde – they like it, it’s the “posh” part i believe. Its within easy striking distance of the south lakes, western part of the dales, bowland etc.

Fleetwood is just plain awful , if its not the fish smell its the sewage treatment plant on its doorstep just yummy on hot days. Its a flat as a witches tit and within striking distance of costa del crimepool.

Traffics ace and im sure its not %60 Eastern European %35 English and % outcast from over the Irish channel .

    Sorry you did ask

On the good side you can get a tram to Blackpool

And yes that really is a good point in Fleetwood as hard as it may be to believe

I live here and it isn’t the Cotswolds but it’s safe with decent people and not many shitty areas and lovely sea front and views, if you need to know more just ask.

Its not what I woud call easy nut yes you can get there

Travel wise one road in and one road out so pretty poor
Its a road to Fleetwood so nothing much happens and no passing traffic

Flat, quite, some nice bits and it not Blackpool

Would not want to live there but not because its rough or owt its just isolated – unless you like the sea

Ah Fleetwood. When the wind blows from the West you can smell the combination of the fish processing factory and the Fishermans Friend factory, and when it blows from the East, you can smell the sewage plant.

Still, it could be worse, could be Blackpool.

Rest of the Fylde coast is nice though.

It does indeed bigee, when the stars align I’ve seen a solid sets of 18inch opposite the sea cadets not a secret spot any more.

Moving to a new area from a long way off without looking?
Don’t buy property. Rent something and work out if you actually want to live there.

Thanks for all the honest feedback.

They’re not moving up there blind, they’ve stayed over previously on a few occasions and have some family nearby.

They’re after more house for their £££ compared to what they can get down here.

Still definatly rent for 6 months first though. Some places are easy to get your cash into and very hard to get it out of….

Even Fleetwood’s pedestrian and cycling link to the “mainland”, the foot ferry over to Knott End, is under threat of closure. Agreed, apart from a tiny area of nice 18th century architecture in the very centre, it’s a dump.

A dump. Like the land that time forgot.

    I wouldn’t live there.

I go there as part of a couple of NHS contracts and it’s dreary, flat, clearly deprived, and in the winter; pretty bleak (but that’s true of any coastal town TBF). If your mum must live on the Fylde coast then there are better places; Lytham, Lytham St Annes, Poulton Le Fylde.

I went to the Nautical College there.

It’s one of the worse places I have ever been.

I got by £300 Townsend MTB nicked out of the shed. I’m sure the caretaker tipped off one of his lads.

The locals are the most unfriendly, xenophobic, violent people I have ever met.

One lad got his ear lobe bitten off.

Another got slashed across the face. The guys that did it, were in a taxi, which stopped, let them out, then waited for them.

It was never a “square go” either. 3 to 1 or better odds were preferred.

All kicked off in The Queens one Sunday afternoon and with even numbers we gave them a kicking.

Nothing good to say about the place!

My now wife took me there once, I am so glad that it was just a brief stopping point on a day long tour………..I still rip the p out of her about it, she agrees with me, we still laugh about it!

Chose to erase it from my memory, 20 years on and I still cant get rid of some of the images in my head.

Makes a good talking point though, unfortunately for the wrong reasons!

My aunt and uncle who lived in Blackpool actually used to go on holiday there!
I guess it was a little better back then but so was Blackpool.

There are actually some very nice bits of Blackpool. Inspired by this thread I had a look at Marton in Blackpool and found I could buy a 3 bed house, the same as the one I was born in and in the same road for less than 100k. It’s only a stones throw from Stanley Park which I still enjoy going to on the very rare occasion I go back to Blackpool. I might just get a bedsit in one of the less desirable bits of Brighton where I now live for that. I can see the sense in what they are doing given that they have friends in the area.

Given the house prices there I could see the attraction for someone wanting to release some equity given (as mentioned above) they have friends there.

Gobuchul…that doesn’t sound like the Queen’s! Always found that to be one of the better pubs, along with the Steamer. I was also at FNC for both OOW & Mates so spent a fair bit of time in the s*****le. Remember when we all ended up getting a police escort home from Rafters one night. Think the worst place was always the Kings though. That really was quite something. The Indian lads were actually told by the local plod to avoid all pubs except for the Strawberry Garden!

dalesjoe – As you did an OOW ticket, you were there a few years after me. 🙂

The slashing incident happened when we had left Rafters. There was 2 of us and we had lost the rest of the group. He had never been in Fleetwood before and when a local took the piss out of his clothes, he was dressed a bit like a gothy prick, he started telling him to f off and stuff. I dragged him away and started to explain what you do in Fleetwood.

We were walking up to another taxi rank, past the library, when a taxi stopped 2 blokes jumped out, one grabbed me and told me it was nothing to do with me and we sort of waltzed on the road, the other one just went and took a stanley knife to the blokes face. Then they jumped back in the taxi and drove off. It was like a professional hit! Bizarre!

The Queens kick off happened when some locals didn’t realise that the 2 or 3 17 yr old ETO trainees were with the 8 or 9 AHTS crew 20 somethings sitting along from them.

    Awful, awful place.

Even the College has gone down the drain. Was ok 3 yrs ago when I did Mate’s but I gather now almost all the decent staff have left. Shame as up for Masters in next few months. Looking unlikely Fwood will be getting my cash!

I only did my Class 3 and 4 there.

    Shields for Mate and Masters.

Fleetwood did have somethings going for it, the grass outside the college was covered in magic mushrooms in the Autumn.

Ben as someone who lives in Fleetwood, it is generally not as bad as described here and safe as long as she’s not sailing on a boat where the master in charge is either a bullchiter a coward or even a user of a hallucinogens although as a £20.000 pound a year factory worker with no qualifications you may be more informed by gobuchul. 😉

    where the master in charge

You will be pleased to know I’m not.

    bullchiter

    Maybe!

    a coward

I’m very scared of heights, so probably right there.

    a user of a hallucinogens

    Not since I left Fleetwood.

it is generally not as bad as described here and safe

It may have improved but in the early nineties it was a terrible place. The tale above is completely true.
