I’m after a new pair of shoes as my current Shimano pair have come to the end of their useful life.

I’d like to be able to use a single pair for riding clipped in and for flats.

    Does such a shoe exist?

Shimano AM9’s look like they might work for both as the cleat is recessed a fair way … or certainly more than my current pair.

    Any recommendations?

I used some AM45s on flat pedals for 2 minutes at the weekend and didn’t die. Wouldnt’ fancy it long term though, the sole can’t sink into the concave well enough.

I’d go for some decent shoes of your main type of pedal, and cheaper versions of what you’ll use less often. If it’s 50/50 then better SPD shoes are more betterer than trainers over flat pedal shoes, at least IMO.
