Fitting a new brake hose on Avid Juicy 5s? - what do i need

Hi,

Got some 2nd hand Juicy 5s and the rear hose will be too short so i need to fit a new one. Im going to try to do it myself with a little help from a YouTube video

I know i need a bleed kit, new hose and new fluid, thats fine. But can i change just the hose or do i need to change other bits or connectors as well? Is any hose fine or do i need Avid specific stuff?

The LBS is quoting about £35-£40 for the job which isnt too bad but i recon hose + Bleed kit is about the same and at least this way i get to keep the bleed kit.

My Bleed kit came with all the extra bits needed for a hose change. So i think you will only need the bleed kit.

Assuming the hose you've got has the banjo bolt you should be fine.

Just don't do what I did and cut the new one too short.

Erm, banjo bolt?

Its a working set of brakes so i'd assume everything is there.

You need to get a M6 banjo Assembly, or at least a hose with a m6 banjo fitting, most hope, Hayes, avid and shimano banjo's are the same, I recently tried to find a banjo assembly for a friends Ultimates but couldn't't find one any ware, looks like you have to buy a hose kit or go the goodridge route, either way it's pricey, or unless you can find a second hand hose with the fitting from somewhere. So long as it has a m6 banjo on the end you should be good to go.

Ive never been able to remove the old banjo assembly from any hoses, IMO they must be factory compressed fitted, unlike the lever end where you can buy replacement olives and m8 compression nuts.

Ive cross used Hayes and Avid hose's with no problems, so long as you get a m8 olive fitting for the lever you shouldn't't have any problems using most manufactures hoses.

Good luck finding a banjo assembly, if you do find one, could you point me in that direction ?? cheers

I'm looking to fit new (fibrax) hoses to some Juicy Ultimates which already have hoses but have been cut down for a smaller bike.

Is this the banjo bolt I need:

The banjo bolt in my juicy 5's is much longer than that pictured one, though I don't know that the bolt from the ultimates will be the same.

Does anyone know how to get the bastard banjo off the end of the hose? Struggling a bit here.

Be careful, I got a 'universal fit' jagwire hose with crimped banjo's on from e-bay. Only to find the banjo does not have the recess for the rubber o-rings used on Avids... guess I have to start over again! Not all banjos seem to fit the Avids - LBS told me the flat ones is for Hope...
