Obi wins!

Thing is, I would not win. Far from it. Compared to lots and lots and lots of people from round here I am seriously shit and unfit.

I'd be a 6. I did it on 32:16 last year, but haven't ridden GT for ages other than just passing through.
It's a good scale of fitness by the OP, in 2006 when I first got back into riding I was a 1 (just) but determination and commuting sorted me right out.

even fat old ton is a number 6.............ffs

5 - last time I was there. I don't consider myself as fit, just determined.

I've never ridden at GT but if I regularly ride W2 at Afan without stopping, occasionally singlespeed, I can assume 6 right?

11. Ride from home, do the black ride home again. Why would you want to stop ?? This takes a lot longer than it used to tho I have to say.

......... and maybe yes if I granny ringed it all the way and paced myself, but I am always being passed by other riders and like to maintain a non-embarassing speed, so tend to burn, collapse, burn, ..............
I have a granny ring and I ain't scared to use it
Seriously - just pace yourself for a climb with any length.

How long does it take you to do the full black, thats the full black with no shortcuts, I do it once a year in October on my own to gauge my fitness, 2h15m has been my best (no stops). looking forward to trying it again this year, after having tackled the Keilder 100.

BUT i do more of the techy stuff than Obi

I tend to stop after about 3 laps of the Black. I need cake by then.

Diane - there is no techy stuff on the black.

My folks live nearby, so when I take the kids we park at the Buzzards and then do the Red/Black from there, finishing at the cafe. And then I ride back to get the car...
For me though its not how far, but what gear I can use. Initially it took the granny on parts (especially the old fire-road section), but now I use the big ring on a lot of it, or the middle worse case.

That was the goal one of the BikeVillage guides used to use out in Les Arcs. A particular fireroad climb where he'd already done things like fastest time etc but where his goal was to do it in 44/12. He managed 44/13 when I was out there (I could only do 44/15
) but setting various targets like that helped him vary his routine a bit.

Obi - yeah i know

Although, being the height you are i suppose any drop looks big to you.

I decided to be sad enough to try this at the weekend and scored a 6 as I rode to the top without ever unclipping...however that's not a good measure of fitness tbh coz it took me an hour to get to the top so I aint that fit, can just keep pedalling at a measured sensible pace
