what has happened to its batter?

They have to discard it and go in search of a new batter every so often when they out grow the old one. This is the time when they’re most vulnerable to predators, it’s also how you fish for cod and haddock using new batter as bait to lure them into the net. They go in thinking it’s a place of safety then discover the pristine batter is tied to the net. Unfortunately their pride won’t let them abandon their fantasy new home even though the cost will clearly kill them.
