I know it’s old hat to a lot of you, but finally got round to doing my first ever night ride that took in some off-road sections (used a local half-road/half-dirt route that I know well to ease myself in).

It’s good fun isn’t it (even in spite of the cold, wind, rain and mud)?

Things I’ve learned even after just one ride –

I need to rig up a better angled helmet light mount.
I need a video camera that has better low light sensitivity.
I need to remember to pack spare batteries for said video camera.
It’s not as scary as you think it is but the shadows do make you ride faster.
Even familiar trails are all new in the dark.
You start to ‘feel’ what the bike is doing under you in a way you rarely do in the daylight.
Even in the dark and wet, there is some twunt out there trying to cause you hurt (really hoping this trunk stuck across the trail was other bikers or just a windfall rather than nimbys).

Bikes look cool in the dark.

    Now to venture further afield…

I love it, any wind and rain makes it seem more of an achievement 🙂

I agree with you mentioning the feel of the bike, a daylight ride after a night feels luxurious. I also feel slower; roots and wet corners seem more demanding but this is welcome on familiar trails.
