I remember Dogbolter at the Famingo & Firkin pub in Derby, when i first started homebrewing with kits i’m sure i made some.
Do you mind posting up the recipe as i wouldn’t mind a bash at that now i’ve progressed to the Massive brewery BIAB method

If you need a “reference pint” it’s still being made at a brewery near me (Gadds of Ramsgate) by a chap who I believe learnt the trade at the Ferkin pubs. Nice beer.

Ooh that takes me back – pints of Dogbolter in the Phoenix & Firkin in Denmark Hill.

    Those were the days……

The best commercially produced beer in the UK IMO. Once tasted, never forgotton…

Went downhill very quickly after Allied Breweries (IIRC) took Bruce’s over and moved production to one of their multi-brew plants.

Dogbolter, oh yes! I used to frequent the Flapper & Firkin in Brum, back in the day.

I seem to remember that the brewer at the start of the Firkin pubs (I think they only had the Fox and Firkin at the time) was an entertaining chap called Andy Rudd.

It’s been back a while now:

IIRC, the guy behind the Ramsgate Brewery was employed at Firkin and when it closed he took a couple of recipes in lieu of redundancy.

It is still as evil as ever 🙂

‘Phoenix my pint I’ll firkin thump him’ was another classic, as was the Goose & Firkin’s ‘Bruce’s Firkin beer always goose down well’.

I used to be a big fan in case you haven’t guessed 😉

Vague memories of drinking Dogbolter many years ago in a Firkin pub on the Isle of Dogs. Do remember one of the guys not managing to walk back to the flat in Kensington and found out he slept in a car boot in a breakers yard!

I always thought the way it got its name was pure urban legend but I’ve lost many hours of my life to the stuff.

The original tale was that David Bruce always tested his new beers on his dogs and one of them took a large slurp of DB, yelped & ran away from it.

    The ‘truth’ seems more realistic.

Yes a very vigorous ferment blew the airlock out so had to fit the blow off tube .

Thanks for the tale there Nobby rebooted the memory cell
