My son is 2 and a half years old and likes to watch Finding Nemo.

He’s starting to ask what happened to Nemo’s mum, so what should I tell him? My wife says it’s not on to tell him that she got eaten by the Barracuda.

    Order fish & chips.

    Bring up the question.

    Look pointedly at the plate.

Tell him but then watch Finding Dory so he know there can also be a happy ending…

See also, Father Christmas and the tooth fairy..?

Ok a bit simplistic on my part but I think if asked a question like this honesty is the best policy.

Kids rarely ask if father Christmas is real until they’re beginning to doubt it.

I’m trying to to convince my 6yo daughter – who is a firm believer in the tooth fairy – that there is an evil twin fairy called the Knot Fairy who is responsible for all those knots in her hair every morning.

So far she refuses to believe me…

Easy fix…put a hair bobble in and tell her it keeps the knot fairy away. Her hair will be almost tug free next morning.

Tell him the truth about Santa and slip the rest in while he’s wailing…

But don’t blame me if he turns into an axe murderer and does his practise at home.

Tell him. It’s a first step in learning to cope with loss, similarly the death of a pet, but don’t say that it “went to sleep”, etc

“she’s sleeping with fishes” covers that

He needs to watch the directors cut, where you see the deleted baraacuda rampage scenes, set to William Orbit’s Adagio for strings. It’s very emotional.
Plus without understanding the trauma of losing his wife and all of the other children (eggs), you cannot begin to understand why Marlin is so overprotective of Nemo, and therefore so driven to swim across the ocean to find him.
