I’ve finally finished the January post storm clear up of fallen timber. The snow drops are coming up so it’s to get back to the studio.

I was up at my parents in Oban last week, I helped my dad build a new log store against the back of his shed… He now believes we’ve made it too nice and he will be using it for something else.. (probably chopping and tinkering out of teh rain) We then had to build some more so that he had somewhere to stick all the wood he’s collected.

Looking at that last pic, I wonder if that would work on a smaller scale?

I have just been offerered apx 20 tons of seasoned from a friend who is moving home and cannot take it with him – he is gutted as most of it is Ash and Oak.

    Nice work MCM btw

Have a good look at how the germans do theirs.
They rotate, it’s all off the floor to prevent moisture transfer and the stuff burns forever!

Cheers guys. I had some extra wood that I had stored in a stone building with only one opening to the wind thinking it would dry. The circulation of air wasn’t as good as I had hoped and a white furry fungus started to appear.

There is probably about half of what is stored in this new shed to find a home for. Is this fungus a warning of the onset of rot, or is it something that was naturally growing on the wood whilst it was stored outside?

I wonder… Is the reason you have to keep building new logpiles just that your old ones are so perfectly packed that it’s impossible to get anything back out?

My main wood stores are still exactly as they were in September. There’s still a third of the 3m3 stored outside the backdoor of the house so they should stay that way. Insulation is what you need, not huge piles of wood.

No harm in stocking up fuel for the future, even if your house is well insulated, is there?

I’m reluctant to keep too much termite and capricorn food near my house for too long (SW France).

Edit: I must get a photo hosting site, some of the holes and grubs in my logs would be worth posting pics of. I check for sawdust piles and burn the infested stuff ASAP.
