Leading on from t'other thread. And maybe we can learn about little gems that don't get any publicity. Share knowledge, get some films to check out.
Mine:
Most recent was Wall-E. I know Pixar are good, but bloody hell. They've managed to pull out one of, if not the, best animated films ever. Stunning. Simply stunning. Really blew me away.
Amelie; I remember seeing a trailer for it, on't telly, and thinking 'what's that poncy french shite'? Watched it, and thought it was fantastic! Proper quirky little number, that one.
Jan Svankmeyer's 'Alice'. Animated version of Alice in Wonderland. Really, really strange. It's an excellent little film; watch it. That's a Rudemendation.
Then there's stuff that I woon't normally watch, but found surprisingly good, like Tea With Mussolini, and Mildred Pierce. Not usually my 'style', but great films in their own right.
There was a film came on late one night, a good few years ago, called The Disappearance of Finbar. Now that was a surprise. Never heard of it? That's my point; sometimes, really good films, which deserve acclaim, slip unnoticed, 'cos the big-money crap gets hyped up so much.
What are your 'surprise' films?
