Iirc it came in when Cadel Evans got 5th in a world cup in Australia as a junior. Its stuck since then.

It’s been 5 forever – it’s (usually) a big bloody field – not 10 in a 100m final or 20 at a F1 race – there can be hundreds of competitors.

Is it possible to win second place? A friend of mine just posted on FB that her daughter won second place in a skating competition. I wanted to reply that she didn’t win, she was actually the first of the losers but didn’t want to p155 on her bonfire as I like her despite her FB boastings.

It’s a tradition in MTB racing, DH at least anyway.
