    Im off to the states, I want to but a MacBook at the NY Apple store, I guess I need to declare it what can i expect to pay – then I can see if its worth doing or not?

    Im even tempted to get a Tallboy LTC frame too!

    you don’t pay tax as you leave, you pay on entering the UK. (In fact you might get to reclaim US purchase tax on departure)

    Or buy duty-free in which case there’s no import tax into UK AFAIK

    You can’t reclaim the NYS and NYC sales tax.

    Are you sure it will actually be cheaper? Mac stuff seems to be the same everywhere.

    Price * Import Duty * VAT = Actual Price paid on import to the UK. You will obviously go down the something to declare channel at UK customs otherwise it’s Tax Evasion…..

    Rates of import duty are variable by type of item and are easily found via google.
    Of course you may not get charged but don’t presume that will be the case. In the end it kind of shows that the price difference is mainly with tax not Rip off importers 🙂
