I don’t think there is a way to embed videos from the CBC, but this talk, delivered by Pat Kelly about being a ‘thought leader’ is pretty incisive, and worth checking out.

It’s probably best to watch the video before reading the accompanying article.

    Enjoy!

Hmm.. we use the term ‘thought leader’ in our organisation. I’m not sure I like it. It implies that you are either one of the special ones who comes up with the ideas or you’re a regular joe who has to follow them.

Anyone can have an idea, and if it’s good it should be listened to. Applying a label to that person is counter productive, I feel.

I have not yet watched the vid though.

I’m not saying Americans don’t get sarcasm – but it seems to take them about two minutes before they get what that guy is doing and start laughing. 😀

Also quite amusing that this talk was in Whistler because TED was held there very recently.

Looks just about my worst nightmare! what does TED actually mean then?

Edit: Never mind, actually read some text and found out….

TED = technology, entertainment, and design.

It’s all well-meaning, but too superficial to hold my interest. Why would it be your worst nightmare, though? That’s a bit extreme I would have thought.

Really can’t be doing with people preaching about how brilliant you should think they are!

Some of them may be brilliant, but it’s all a bit too false and corporate for me.

Maybe worst nightmare is too strong but i’d last about 30 seconds at one of those gigs before walking out or punching someone!!

Edit: video in your OP is funny though. I like taking the piss out of too serious people.

See I’m very much the opposite – I love hearing ideas and experiences from people that are smarter than me or who have taken a different life path.

ads: did you try the Tom Thum or the quadcopters one? Surely you can manage 30 seconds of them?

The parodies by The Onion are also good if that is your sort of thing

    Example :

They used to be great at the start but now its very patchy. The monica lewinsky one is worth hunting down. We did a thread on the good ones not all that long ago

That’s kind of where I’m at with it. Those audiences will applaud pretty much anything.

People in my organisation also use the words ‘thought leader’ and ‘thought leadership’; I will never bring myself to it, just no.

Standard of TED talks is pretty low, every time I watch one, I wonder why I bothered, a bit like a polished version of Newsround for adults….

The parody is pretty spot on.
