Not sure if this has been done yet but I saw a new story saying male models are petitioning the fashion industry for equal pay. A female model gets upto £40k to walk the walk but a man only gets £10K.

I’m all for equal pay so pay them both < £5k the residual could go to clothe those in need.

Those people who don’t have enough clothes? You could just cut out the middle man and pay it straight to the catwalk models.

Struggling to GAS, esp many women working get paid less than their male counterparts. I would imagine that there probably aren’t many men getting paid less than women to do the same job.
Probably better to sort the female inequality first then worry about the poor loves in fashion.

The million dollar question at the Guardian is, how many of them are fat?

    Because fat lives matter, apparently.

I think the problem is models are generally self employed – the agency works for them not the other way around. So their isn’t ‘pay’.

It’s a sales job, the female models bring in the big money, the men don’t.

Ye gods, heaven forbid there should be one industry in the world where women earn more than men. Quick, stamp it out!!1!

Do the male models have to go on starvation diets?

Steady on, they also have the porn, prostitution and divorce industry.

Divorce I’m totally with you on but it’s hardly a profession (well, a few dodgy exceptions aside). I’m assuming your other suggestions are trolling for comedic effect.

    Why not ?

Saw a tongue in cheek facebook post the other day asking why women don’t sue for equal representation in male dominated jobs like mining, sewerage cleaning and refuse collaection ?

I’m sure all of this is covered in Ally McBeal.

I thought I’d get away with “many”, as I didn’t have the figures to back up the use of “most” and thought the rabid corretamantarians would pull me to pieces.

Well, the chicks are much better looking than the men, so of course they should get more money. Obv innit.

    porn is definitely one.

Also you could say tennis, when compared to the amount of effort they have to put in…

Similar argument for male athletes, but I think in both cases it’s a bit chicken and egg. And I think in both cases it would do a great deal to further gender equality if women doing athletic/brave stuff and men wearing pretty clothes could be seen as valid role models more often.

You just need to look at the magazine racks. Magazines aimed at men have women on the front. Magazines aimed at women…. have women on the front. Neither men or women have any real interest (commercially) in looking at pictures of men in nice clothes.

Except for me. Everyone wants to look at pictures of me in nice clothes. Obvs.

Its one of the things that makes equality of opportunity difficult to measure. You can have the ambition to make a traditionally main dominated profession equally accessible to women (or viceversa)- whether thats jobs at the coal face or jobs on the board. But not matter how equal an opportunity is you can’t necessarily make men and women equally interested in taking it.

Please post some. I’ll pay. But not quite as much as I’d pay a lady.

I disagree. I think a lot of the disparity in male and female roles is due to societal expectations, due to the fact that there are few role models for women and men doing things that confound gender stereotypes.

I would expect most men working at a coal face or on a bin lorry do it because they want to earn a decent wage for their level of qualification. Why on earth would a woman not wish to do the same?

It’s like average pay, male/female doesn’t tell the whole story..

In fairness that is actually illegal as they are doing the same job.

Equal pay and “the gender pay gap” are not the same thing and for full time worker in the UK, for the likely age group being referred to here, doesn’t actually exist.

I’d imagine training to win a tennis tournament probably takes approximately all of your working time, certainly in the run up to it (press appearances and contractual obligations and whatnot excluded). Regardless of gender.

Do you think we’re getting kinda close these days with at least athletes?

not sure how the Williams regime compares to Murray and Federer but I seriously doubt it is anywhere near as intense – they seem to be able to swan about, take a few breaks, and then come back and win a few more majors at will, such is the lack of depth in the womens game. It is only recently they have been challanged.
