Great call on the good the bad and the ugly, but have to disagree with you on there will be blood. Good god, I nearly wept with joy when it finished. Nearly as bad as AI!

The Good The Bad & The Ugly is a definite

There Will be Blood is good but not as good as No Country for Old Men!

the problem with Once Upon Time in The West is that the opening scene is soooo brilliant the rest of the film isnt quite as good

    Zulu (man against man)

Jaws (man against animal – or fish if you prefer)

    Take Shelter (man against himself)

You could add “One Flew Over….” to the latter.

Sorry, maybe too much port, and ownership of Fatty to boot.

Aguirre, Wrath of God is hugely epic. My favourite Herzog film. Fitzcarraldo too.

Once Upon A Time In The West and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for Westerns.

Foreign language film but well worth persevering with
the subtitles; Life is Beautiful is the happiest sad film you will ever see

I’d add The Longest Day to that list, not as gritty as some of the others but a damn fine movie with a who’s who of the best actors around in 1962

    Come on – no-one mentioned “Heaven’s Gate”?

Panned at the time just because it cost so much, but it is brilliant.
Kris Kristopherson is a wonderful actor.
Also Walken, Dourif, Bridges, Huppert – can’t go wrong.

but if you haven’s seen Lawrence of Arabia watch that instead, it really is “epic”

I would define ‘epic’ as stunning photography, awe inspiring vistas and shed loads of extras. Looks like that ‘Red Cliff’ has those in spades, I’m gonna track it down…

A lot of great films mentioned here, most of them I wouldn’t class as “epics” though. I agree with shermer’s definition above, plus I would say the story has to span many years and a 2.5 hour+ runtime doesn’t hurt!

Definitely the best I’ve seen has been Once Upon A Time in America. It’s pretty long already but the blu-ray cut is over 4 hours!

1941? The Spielberg comedy that was so bad it’s been effectively buried for the last 34 years?!

Badlands has epic vistas, great film, little short on extras.

Dances with Wolves (1990) (definitely an epic)

    Open Range (2003) (epic cinematography)

    Epic Movie (2007) (definitely not!!)

‘The English Patient’ is pretty good. Good story, well cast, great acting from even the supporting cast, beautifully cinematography and equally well edited (it’s easy to be heavy handed with stories that cross multiple “time” periods) and heart wrenchingly sad in places.

Also, ‘The Third Man’ an old film that stands up remarkably well to modern scrutiny, not necessarily “epic” in scope, but the atmosphere and setting in post war Vienna, combined with radical for the time camera work means it’s unforgettable.

Watched Prometheus recently. Not a massive Sci-Fi fan, but thought it was awesome. Sucked in from start to finish. Ridley Scott does it best.
