Drills are worth a thread of their own.

I will try and get a pic of my ancient Isambard Kingdom Brunel spec floor standing model too.

Far left hand side of workbench: ancient pillar drill rescued by Dad from the Smiths Industries factory near Cheltenham during a refit. Nice range of speeds (manually changed by moving the drive belt up and down a range of pulleys)

Stoner, that has to be the tidiest workbench I’ve ever seen!

Hammers with heated handles I’ll have you know…

Not left handed. The power tools get brought to the middle of the bench for use.

The workbench does not currently look like that. Oh no. That was a pic when first built. It has never looked as tidy since.

Here’s my old school Denbeigh. You can slide the drill head up and down, and the table. There is a pulley system with a counter balance weight inside the pillar. A beautiful piece of British engineering.

Been using a Denbeigh pnumatic press this afternoon followed by a session with a Herbert pillar drill, the boss reckons rolls royce of pillars 🙂

Worked with timbermills for a few years, the sheer amount of 50 year old equipment still in service (stenner saws) in smaller yards, you just can’t buy the solid quality.
Some of these old drills and equipment will long outlast us and live on in sheds 🙂

Been meaning to take phone into workshop to take a picture of our pillar drill for everyone to laugh at. (yes we know a typical untidy farm workshop but we know where everything is!)

That looks like it could do with a bigger warning sign.

Do you think so? The drill is so big we’ve got a roof mounted pulley system above it to hang things from whilst drilling!

To be fair we do work on some damm big machinery!

It looks like it’s about to come alive and start drilling people.

Now that’s a traction engine! Nice range of drills, too. We have a couple of old… tables, I guess you could call them, at work, with really thick wood legs, and cast iron tops. They weigh a staggering amount, difficult to get moving even with a pallet truck. They are old typesetting compositor tables, for assembling hot metal type on.
They’d be bloody wonderful in a shed.
Provided the floor was up to taking about half a ton of tables.
Sigh, I have a terrible case of shed envy going on here. 🙁

    That’s not a pillar drill, it’s a radial drill…. And it’s a baby one 🙂
