  • Edinburgh to St Andrews Charidee Ride. When did it change into a MAMILfest?

I joined the Edinburgh to St Andrews ride from the bridge this morning. I’ve ridden it a few times in the last thirty years. I even did it on a mountain bike with slicks. Seems the demographic has changed now.

It used to be comprised of wool wearing tree hugging hippies. Today I found myself in a bunch on my steel Roberts with mudguards, racks and dynamo lights with Rapha clad, carbon framed, Zipp wheeled MAMILS. Still the quality of the tea and cakes in the village halls on the route hasn’t changed.

Was that the LEPRA thing? I thought they did it in August. I’ve missed the last three now…

Aye. It was a nice ride just ahead of the drizzle.

Lots of these sorts of rides have become a bit MAMIL-ish. I honestly don’t mind, there’s often some serious Bike porn to drool over and it’s great to see bike events really well supported.

I’ve done it a couple of times – back it the day like you I think Peter – I recall us setting off at a good pace, with slicked up MTBs as you say (Gary I think had City Slickers, rest just pumped our tyres up super hard) and made good progress until we espied a pub – Falkland possibly – at which point our progress became more, ah, leisurely 🙂
