Large item I need to get rid of…

Too big to courier really collect only. Is Gumtree best way to try and sell or eBay (definitely no PayPal insist on cash on collection I assume)?

Gumtree, or Freecycle if you’re feeling generous. Obviously you can do a pickup only item on ebay and ask for cash off the buyer when they win.

Yup, I have two stone sinks to get rid of soon,they are going on local gumtree.
I haven’t bought or sold from Ebay in ages,but you see plenty pick up only listings.

I think it depends what it is. The lower the value the more I’d go gumtree

If its got some real rarity or value then I’d go ebay as people might travel further

garden furniture I’d go ebay

sailing dinghy I’d go ebay or specialist website

Why not both? Stick it on gumtree for a couple of weeks, then fling it on ebay, if anyone shows interest on ebay you could accidentally mention it’s for sale on gumtree.

On EBay the bids were building up and then I got my asking price on gumtree…..so I ds old on gumtree and cancelled the eBay ad
BUT if you cacel an item on eBay with bids on it…..you get charged a fee for what the last bid was…….my last bid was £220……so I wasn’t happy to be charged £22

Yeah, you lose the benefit if you have equivalent value bids. But it can still work (you can cancel bids of course- but you need to know all this in advance to make it work)

What’s wrong with paypal? They pay first then come to collect, meaning you don’t get folk wasting your time with collection slots and not turning up. I’d put up a gumtree ad, plus and ebay ad (at 15-20% more than the gumtree ad). Don’t ever go out of your way to wait in for people, especially from gumtree.

Put text in the ebay ad to the effect of “Item is for sale elsewhere and may be removed at any time. Please contact TELNO for details”.

They then collect it and lodge a complaint with eBay that they haven’t received the item. Ebay ask for proof of postage, which you do t have, then refund the buyer. Not common but it can happen.

Fairly sure eBay’s t&c are fairly clear that if you list it you are meant to sell it via them. By adding the note that it’s listed elsewhere merely means that awkward people could just report you to ebay and get the listing removed and could leave you open to being banned or whatever eBay’s sanctions are.

Does this happen, even if you put ‘item for collection only’ on the auction?
How can you provide proof of postage for an item that you have listed as collection only? Bit worrying if they’d still side with a scam buyer in this instance.

I’ve sold a few items as collection only on eBay in the last few months – I think they have all been paid in advance by Paypal.
Once the deal has been done and payment made, I have then sent my address to the buyer through ebay and done all of the arranging of the collection time/date through ebay as well.

I have debated taking a few pics of the item being loaded into the vehicle along with the person who came to collect, but thought that perhaps a step too far.
I wonder what the best steps are to avoid getting scammed in this way?

Ebay, cash on collection and cancelling to save the fees seems common. I’ve only been on the buying side of this so don’t know how easy it is to save the fees. Claim it’s broken perhaps?

Depending on the item(s), a local Facebook is pretty good to sell stuff. I sold a fridge freezer within 2 mins of the advert on my local FB page this morning.

Just be careful ending ebay listings – if it’s an auction, then ebay will take 10% of whatever the bid was at the time of ending it. If it’s a buy it now, then bob’s your uncle, no charges for ending even if you’ve just received an offer and emailed the buyer via ebay to give them your phone number!

You need to be a bit careful doing this, as eBay own Gumtree – it’s conceivable they’d put two and two together.
