Listed an item on e-bay this afternoon with a buy it now option. On the listing it is paypal only but the person who won my item has sent an e-mail asking me to send them my address so they can pay by cheque also they want the item delivering to a different address than on there profile.
I reckon this is a con should I walk run away from this buyer and contact e-bay and get it re listed

How much feedback have they got and is it all good?
Alternatively they might want it sent to an address where someone is there to receive it (used my ma's address before)
Also wait until the cheque clears and the money is in your account, at least they can't raise a paypal dispute against you.
Perhaps some more communication would help
say your item is 10 quid, you'll receive a cheque for 100 "by accident" and they'll ask you to cash it anyway and send the item + 90 quid "change" when it clears. but its a stolen business cheque so it'll clear at first, but the bank will recover so you'll be left without your item and 90 quid down.

Cheques never really clear. Or to put it more accurately the fact that the money appears in your account from a cheque doesn't mean that it will actually stay there.
IanMunro is right, cheques can 'bounce' weeks after they appear to have cleared.
The fact that he's asking *after* the auction is finished tells me you should stay away - any normal person would read your ad and ask beforehand.

It specifically said Paypal only on the listing now I am screwed because the cretin didnt read before he hit the buy it now button its going to take at least a week before i can relist. I have missed an opportunity to sell there were 4 people watching even though it had only been listed for an hour.
Surely just report him as a non-paying bidder and relist immediately?
Cheques are a dodgy way of paying anything these days, its like picking the least secure method you can, on both sides.

Unfortunately I have to give him seven days to pay even though he has told me he has no intention of paying. He said he hasnt got a paypal account which seems strange how do you open an ebay account without one. I even said if he knew someone with a paypal account they could pay for him but no reponse. Looks like I am going to have to wait.

What a load of drivel. Take the cheque, check with your bank how long it can be bounced for (Usually 10 days) and explain this to the buyer. If they are legit they'll understand and you avoid the Paypal fees. Simple.

One the money's in your bank account and cleared, it should be OK unless you have specific reason to doubt the buyer. And not reading the description isn't a reason to doubt him - he's just not noticed that.

Thats what I thought but the resolution centre wont let me relist till 7 days have passed. Unless there is a another way of doing it anyone point me in the right direction.

I have spent half an hour reading the feedback and it is suspicously perfect all the feedback says virtually the same thing with a spelling error that crops up to often to be real. I have a feeling the cheque might be issued by a Nigerian bank.

you can ask your bank to send it special presentation, where they will get confirmation from teh issuing bank that the cheque is ok to pay away.
As said above the normal APACS clearing system is very funny. you will be able to see the cheque in your account is as little as 2 business day (not including the day the cheque was paid in) days and be able to lift the funds however cheque can still bounce for 6 business days after it has entered the clearing system.
Used to be the case that it could take weeks but the new 2-4-6 process that APACS introduced in Novemenr 2007 (I think this is when it was??) changed all this.
I would wait till then before you sent out the item. After 6 days it is the banks problem and they will need to raise fraud proceedings. At that point the cash is yours and as far as I know it can't be taken back Look at the APACS clearing website if you need confirmation of this.
Avoid the cheque route if possible. Ask him to pay cash into your bank account at his local branch. This way the money doesn't need to clear and it's safe.
Otherwise offer it to the second highest bidder if you are able to.
