    I don’t really know how the rifles they use compare to a (very powerful) handgun

    I think rifles impart a fair bit more energy into the bullet – much more time in the barrel for the expanding gas to do its thing.

    I suppose the design of the bullet would also make a difference. Some will go through things more easily than others.
