    🙁 (told you)

Just received 240s on Arch from a well known german bike retailer. Front is stiff and notchy when spun with the hub held in the fingers. Feels like the bearings have been overloaded and the races indented. Not sure how this might have happened, or what else it could be, but that’s what it feels like: 15 or so (?) sticking points as the wheel rotates.

I’ve emailed them to send me replacement bearings, as I’d rather not faff about with packing and posing the wheel back to Germany. Reply awaited.

If they agree to send them, is it a relatively easy job to replace them? I’ll be takiong the 20mm adapters off to replace with 15mm ones, so I guess that’s part of the job done already?

    Cheers,

    OK, I’ve found this: http://www.dtswiss.com/getdoc/1219c0b7-776d-46ea-8625-dedf5ec2de19/Datasheet.aspx page 33/34

Suggests I need axle clamping tools to stick in a vice, and another to knock the bearings on.

Are these necessary, or can you get away with rags in the vice and careful mallet work?

    Thanks for any help.

you can do it without any specialist tools.
i marked the end caps a bit i think when i changed mine, but as they’d failed pretty quickly too – 4 months or so, the newness was already well worn off.

The only special took you need is for the rear hub when you need to change the bearing behind the ring nut.
Other than that, common sense & reasonable DIY skills are plenty enough.

Hmmm. cheers guys. good to know.

Started looking at replacement bearings. Enduro steel are £8.00ish, ceramics are £30 ish. Makes you wonder a bit where the money goes in expensive hubs. Feel like a wee bit of a mug!

I could have bought A2Zs and put ceramics in them. which would be the better hub? (yeah, I know there are issues with the o/s hub on the A2Zs)

Sockets and hammers is all you need. But I’d still be chasing it with the seller.

I wouldn’t buy Enduro personally, their hub bearings might be great but their BB bearings were sufficiently awful to put me right off. You can go ceramic if you want but I’d recommend just picking out a well priced quality bearing- Koyo, FAG, SKF, INA, the usual suspects.

Or there is always the madman Kaesae, whose bearings are doing very nicely in one of my bikes.

I did think of special K! (no offence Kaesae!) I will be looking you up in a sec.

Cheers for the heads up re: Enduro, they were just who I thought of first, after getting good use out of their BB bearings myself. Anyone know who DT get their OE bearing from?

Chasing is well under way with retailer. Naming/praising/flaming to follow as appropriate!
