I fancy upgrading the shifters & mechs on my Helius.

Currently it's running X5 shifters, LX front mech and a X7 rear mech.

CBA'd changing the front mech as it works (unless there's an amazin' deal involving a posh one)

What the crux of the question is, should I go down the X9 shifters & rear mech route or go for SLX or XT throughout?

I've got full LX on my Handjob so I'm used to the whole shimano v's SRAM thingy when it comes to shifting. THe only thing I've found is shimano jockey wheels don;t last that long im my experieince.

Also can you get red anodised chain ring bolts for SLX cranks?

It's be wise to keep to the same make of bits as you have for your other bike (i.e. Shimano): only only type of parts to worry about buying, plus you can always rob bits off one to make/fix/bodge t' other.

Shimano every time. It's just better.

In that case what rear mech long or short cage?

I've got a medium SRAM one on there at the mo.

SLX tripple up front, 11-34 XT cassette out back
