I was just watching that, but it really irritates me the way programmes like this now have to be all about the presenter and their 'journey', with incredibly drawn out snippets about the actual theory/premise, rather than just presenting the information in an intelligent way.
Looks like their dumbed down approach works for some people though.

I watched Amazon with Bruce Parry and thought that, I really enjoyed the show and I think he's good but its the Amazon! I'll never get there so show me more of it and less of Bruce please

Hmm. All that "I really think early humans took this route" irritated me. No Alice, you didn't think it, you read it in one of the many hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles that have been published on the subject.
And the out of Africa hypothesis was almost univesally accepted years and years ago.

finbar - her reading journal articles on the subject doesnt mean she has to agree with them, or present them as her thoughts. While I've not reviewed her publication list I'm fairly sure she's more than capable of collating relevant data and making her own mind up.
As for the hypothesis being accepted years ago, sure it was - but only recent studies appear to have proven it.
Not too sure what you want on the TV, in depth brand-spanking-new-breakthrough discoveries presented by the author only. Suspect that would make for poor TV myself!

I think she's great. She's clearly very bright which as coffeeking pointed out is highly attractive. She comes across well, she's not afraid to get out and do proper outdoorsy stuff which is also attractive and irrespective of where she's getting her discussion from it's all interesting. Plus she's not a bad looking lady at all. Ticks all my boxes.

The stuff that annoyed me is stuff like the 'we have to ask the permission of the tribe leader, if he says no, our journey could be over before it begins' bit - and surprise surprise he says yes. I don't see why we have to see everything turned into a Bear Grylls style falsely hyped narrative of the making of the programme, with incredibly drawn out hyperbole, and focussing on 'personalities'. If the subject matter is interesting and well presented it should stand up by itself.
You do see the odd programme which is still done in that way and its a refreshing change.

Yes, but my point was that she did present them as her own thoughts. As Grumm points out other TV programs are perfectly capabale of reporting science without pretending that it's the presenter's own theories.

grumm - Yes, it's just easy watching for the general public I suspect, keeps people "involved", maybe they've found most people switch off unless its a reality-style TV program
Big Brother anyone?finbar - she presented them as her own *thoughts*, not as her own material. Countless times she pointed out that other people researched and found the details out and that it was based on numerous authors work, she just presented it as "I think this happened [based on what I've read/seen/done]". This is much the same as me saying "I think that because the youngs modulus of steel is around 200GN/m^2, that beam will deflect by 10mm" - I'm using known info to put forward a point that is already known (effectively) and found by other people, but presenting it as my own opinion. I'm not plagiarising Young by doing so.
Most of the population turn off when presented with science programs, espeically ones about things that aren't explosive or car related, I think any method of presenting the information (if factually correct) to the public is to be encouraged. I'm clearly no psychologist, but I suspect that by presenting it in that fashion she is inviting deeper involvement in the subject matter as you're feeling like you're following a story with her, rather than her lecturing.

It was a little dumbed down yes, but as has been said, it is competing with some pretty dumb programming. Not in the same league as Horizon or David Attenborough's stuff but still quite watchable.

For sure, the material was dumbed down for the sake of popular appeal (and some of it was pretty cringeworthy), but so what? Anything that gets fossil hominins on primetime TV is a good thing.
