Another job interview on Monday. In an industry I have no experience of, and only a passing knowledge. So STW where to start with my research (apart from the company and it’s competitors etc)?

Any major issues in this area at the moment in terms of subsidy etc?

Is now a good time or a terrible time to go solar PV or heating?

Don’t get too hung up on specialist industry knowledge over and above what you can get from general search on google. You got the interview on the back of your CV so it should be obvious to your potential employers that you have no previous industry experience or knowledge so it would be unreasonable for them to probe your knowledge on it. They’re more interested in your previous experience and what you can offer them, so focus mostly on those transferable skills you’re brining over from your previous jobs. You can learn all you need to know about the specific industry when you get the job.

Aren’t all the government subsidies for solar PV (and renewables in general) being cut back a lot?

No subsidies required now. We are told wind power is cheaper than fossil fuels. Fill your boots!

Ha! The capital price of renewables has strangely gone down since the subsidies were cut. Funny old thing, that. Is it due to a sudden breakthrough in “technology” which coincided perfectly with the sub cut? 😀

Yeah, solar tariffs cut by 87% on January 1st. Biomass has had some serious balancing done but stable now (till we hear what’s happening when the current funding stream expires on March 31st. Other technologies still funded at the domestic level.

We are miles behind our heating targets though so the industry thinks the rhi will continue in some shape.

I’m in the industry (although thankfully not in domestic) and email in profile if you wanted to drop me a line with any questions.

If Europe can stop it’s current love affair with biomass heating we might stop the stupidity it is driving – but that’s not just domestic.
