Has anyone had to rehome a dog? If so do you have any suggestions on where I should start?

The girlfriend and I have recently split and are currently going through the dividing shared items, discussing mortgage issues, etc, etc.

We have a wonderful black lab dog who has been my trusty companion for 2 years and is well trained (because we/I spent a lot of time with him).

Unfortunately, I do not feel like taking the house on on my own and keeping the dog. Its just not suitable for a single man. The ex, whatever her choice on the house is not keen to keep him. The folks are not retired yet and therefore unsure as to whether they can look after him (although they would often have him for the weekends if we had plans).

My ideal scenario would be for my folks and sister to share responsibility (as they live close by) but I think this is a long shot.

Not sure what to do. Pretty sad times. Thoughts, advice, etc.

    Contact your nearest Labrador rescue:

they will help you find a new 'good' home. Best bet would be if you could use them to find people and then you vet them.

Where abouts are you in the UK? as my father was recently widowed and might be looking for a companion dog

edit: just looked at your profile, and you are in the North so not idea for him to come and look at.

We had to rehome Kobe (left) due to a sudden and violent struggle for 'pack position' between him and Ozzy (middle)

A friend of ours breeds Boxers so we had an avenue to explore there but we ended up having success closer to home.
We got family members to spread the word and within days we had 3 potential homes through friends/work colleagues.
Kobe was rehomed within the week. Heartbreaking but the best thing for him and he is so much more content being an 'only dog'

Thanks for the responses folks, appreciated. I'll start investigating the avenues.

Having thought about it this morning I thought I'd ask the vets, the people who run the local dog walking firm and puppy training/socialisation classes. Thinking about the gundog breeders we bought him from although they live miles away.

Its tough to think I'll never see him again. As I work from home we've kept each other company for 2 years. Gut wrenching.

I've 2 dogs, a flat-coat retriever (rescued) and an elderly golden retriever (14) and could offer a really good home. If you don't find anyone more local then keep me in mind. Live near Skipton and walk 3 miles each day with the flat-coat. My dogs have to enjoy camping and bike trails! Email me if you need more info.

We're currently considering ownership of a dog (finally) now that I'm working from home. I'm up in Scotland, but that wouldn't neccessarily be a problem for me.

If he gets on well with other dogs (I occasionally dog-sit for my sister's collie), and fancies spending a chunk of his time wandering round an outdoor centre getting fussed over by teenagers, then let me know.

Thanks folks, I'll keep you in mind but I'm going to look local first. He's chipped, vacinated, wormed regularly, etc, etc. In fact here he is enjoying Bamburgh:

He's a good looking fella and due to his gundog heritage althletic in shape. Goes by the name of Marley.

you work from home but couldn't keep him?
    🙁
we shipped ours off to the MIL's last night cos i'm away for a couple of days and SHMBO is out today, and the house felt bloody odd with us both home, but no spaniel. dunno what i'd do without one of them…
hope you can work things out. not easy i'm sure. all the best.

KoB, whatever you do good luck mate.
It must be very emotional to part with your dog.
I'd be beyond consolation if I was without the bear (and I know I will be when he goes). 😥

Contact me if you change your mind re local rehoming.

Our Springer Spaniel (4yrs old) is seeking a playmate for mtb rides, country walks etc.

We live in a rural area, lots of fields, forests, horses etc and Cosmo our Springer loves the local singletrack.

Our dog would love that- do you offer holiday packages for dogs? 😉
