The horrific tunes, the commercialism, the expectation that you should be enjoying yourself just because its a randommly chosen day of the year, the expense, the screaming kids, the inevitably rubbish weather, people trying to sing carols…

Call me the grinch but I absolutely fing loathe it…

Not even any good films on…

    Humbug..

    It’s cool to hate.
And it’s even cooler to have a hate thread on STW, even though they’re quite common these days.

I quite like the sense of optimism in the air leading up to it, but then it’s shit, yes.

I never understand the hatred of christmas, it is at least at the very basic level some time off work, and unless you absolutely love your job more than freetime what is there to hate?

I find it rather easy to ignore all the worst of the crass commercialism and just take what I want from it, a bit of time off and a chance to unwind in the middle of winter between the holidays I really love when the weather is better.

It’s 2016, if you haven’t worked out how to watch a decent film on Christmas Day yet, then perhaps the complexities of enjoying the day will be a step too far.

Nope, I’m accused of it all the time, I had a few very few tough ones as a kid and I hated it as a single adult, few found memories but as a Dad I love it.

Not in November though, nor Oct and certainly not in Sept – not after the 27th either. There’s so much pressure to make it ‘perfect’ when I always prefer chaos.

I’d like everyone to take a gigantic chill pill over it – tell the retailers to piss off and take it down a notch or 15.

Yes, we have no money but I’m not allowed to say that because it’s Christmas. Instead I have to smile and continue to rack up debt.

I hate Christmas, I hate the songs, I hate the commercialism. I particularly hate the way brands like Coke try to hijack the whole thing.

But I love presents and booze so I’m gonna shut my mouth.

I’m working a 25 hour shift, in a children’s home full of children who have to spend the day having their noses rubbed in it that their families either can’t or won’t spend time with them. It never ends well.

To me, it’s just another day. Celebrate if you like, I don’t care, I just wish everyone would stop giving me shit because I neither like nor wish to celebrate Christmas.

So no, I don’t despise Christmas, but I do resent being constantly brow beaten for not wanting to take part in it.

I dont despise it but I’ve got good reason not to feel particularly jolly at this time of year and don’t feel that faking merriment for appearance sake would be a good idea.

    Irony overload!

As for Xmas, I enjoyed listening to do they know it’s Xmas in Sainsbury’s this morning as people were stuffing their trollies with Xmas excess. Thank god it’s them instead of you – quite. Of course, I was doing the same, it’s Xmas isn’t it?

dont hate it hate it, but i do dislike it. id prefer not to have it and just crack on with normal life, but theres too many family members that love it for me to just ‘not do christmas’.

I can kind of understand the pressure that parents feel to “create” something special for their kids at Christmas, but really I can barely remember anything specific about any christmas from my childhood, they were all much of a muchness, my parents couldn’t afford the best toys I wanted, and now that couldn’t matter any less. But they were off work, I got a bit of attention and we ate together and laughed and played, FFs just enjoy it you miserable ****!

I dislike being told when to take my holiday. If lived in Australia I might appreciate a compulsory mid-summer break but I don’t. I live in Scotland. It’s miserable and dark and wet and windy and cold and I’m stuck indoors with all this crap. I think we need a petition to move Christmas to June.

Now that we’re leaving Europe maybe we can go our own way on this.

Surely that is all the more reason for it not to be like any other day.

I enjoy the festivities despite being a massive hypocrite because I’m atheist 🙂 I have 3yo and 6yo kids which makes it ace.

But yes, secret Santa, elf on the shelf, wrapping paper in the supermarket in September can all sod off. Buying stuff for kids of xyz that are no relation is also something that I’d rather we all didn’t do but that’s just me

I enjoy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but get fed up with Christmas songs and adverts playing constantly for 5 weeks. i also get pissed off listening to people at work morning about having to work over Christmas. The same people moan every year despite the fact they can book it off but never do

Quite like new year’s though. The only day of the year it’s socially acceptable to be as drunk as I like to get on a regular basis.

Depends how much pressure is put on you to conform by kids, family, work, society or yourself. Rabid atheist but I pick and choose what bits I do and opt out of the rest. A winter break in which family and friends are mostly free to see a bit of and a few traditions to add a splash of color to an otherwise grey time of year. Works for me.

I have a friend whose partner died this year and his step daughter who he was devoted to has been whisked away to live with the with natural father’s family many miles away and he has no visitation rights. His mother also died and he never knew his own father. He struggled to cope and lost his job. This was not the Christmas he was hoping for. Now he has the right to hate Christmas this year. Now man up OP and make the most of it!

I don’t really hate it, but it’s a bit of a pain in the arse. I think it happens too often, maybe every other year would be better, then it would feel more exciting! Got a child of my own though now so I’ll start thinking differently once she knows what’s going on!

Aside from genuine tragedy, my experience of people who hate Christmas is just that they are tight-fisted, and like to add other reasons on to hide the main reason.

I think its what you make it, nobody makes you buy stuff you don’t need and you don’t have to eat and drink too much. You also don’t have to listen to the music or watch Christmas movies.

Enjoy the time off work and do what makes you happy.

    Merry Christmas

Sorry hooli and angeldust, but people do make you buy stuff you don’t need. It’s the basis of a whole industry called advertising. If you don’t believe me, check out the non Christmas related pushback from the drinks industry on a sugar tax.

I haven’t even bought any gifts this year, the wife and daughters faces in the morning, priceless.
