Wanna use an old iPhone to play music. Does it need a sim?

No, I use an old 3g sat in the glove compartment as a music source for the ridiculously short media lead in the car. So you should be fine.

Agree. 3GS used for music and strava duties with no sim.

    No, a 3, a 4 and a 5, all without SIM’s, prove that.
Unless, of course, you’re talking about streaming music from the net, in which case, yes, it does.
Without a SIM, you’ve got an iPod Touch.

You need a SIM to set it up I think, but after that you are away…

Turn on airplane mode, then turn on wifi, job done.

My old 4S is in a dock streaming from my NAS. Ideal job for an old phone in retirement. 🙂

Has that changed recently? My iPhone 6 is ‘bricked’ without a sim in it.

Yes, if you factory reset it you’ll need to have a working SIM inserted while it does the initial activation. Once you’re past that you can remove and it will work fine.
