Thinking of swapping my triple chainset for a compact double. Obviously at the moment i’ve got Ultra triple STI shifters (ST6603), do they still work with a double chainset?

If they do is it better to have the double chainset using the inner and middle shift settings, or the middle and outer shifts?

Yes they work fine! You just have a dead shift as you only move between 2 chainrings not 3

They do, but some versions* can be fragile if you’re the sort of absent-minded git who forgets they’re in the big ring and tries to shift up.

* my 5600 triples were, anyway

You should be able to use the upper 2 positions to avoid that ^

My lads Specialized 29er hardtail comes as a 2×9 with a triple shifter on the front so it must work fine.
