OK so I am going to tackle painting a wooden fire surround. Its currently varnished. I am thinking –

    Sand with 180 grit
Paint with primer (not sure which primer?)
    Sand with something finer, 280?
    Paint with egg shell
    Sand
    Paint with egg shell

    Does that sound about right?

Is the wood stable and well-acclimatised to the room and the fire? A hot fire will cause shrinkage and cracks.

I did the same thing, the original mantle was varnished a dark brown and we wanted to use it for the new wood burner (what else?).

I just sanded the crap out of it to get as much of the varnish off as possible and primed it then painted it twice.

My wife did the final painting as apparently i use too much paint…i think she did sand it a little bit first.

Any tips on a decent primer? I assume the wood is acclimatised as its been in place for a number of years.
