Dislocating shoulders! when I ride. Anyone like me out there!

Anyone else get this? I had an off a few weeks back as my shoulders both popped out (forward anterior dislocation) when landing a drop! I actually did a good job of the drop but my shoulders failed my and led my the the nettles.
one popped in straight away and the Other stayed out for 20 mins or so.
Only just got back to speed after a knee op last summer… I’m worried that I’ll be a nervous rider when I’m fixed. Scan next week.
Anyone share a simular experience?

After i dislocated my shoulder (thankfully only once ) i used a brace for a while – pretty uncomfortable . I can’t imagine wearing 2 braces.
I would get myself some physio asap to strengthen the supporting muscles.

howsyourdad1Free MemberJesus that sounds horrific! I had a troublesome right shoulder that would ‘partially’ dislocate. The bone ‘ball’ in my arm would apparently ride up on the edge of the ‘cup’ joint , but not go completely out. Excruciating pain for 10 mins then very sore. Would happen for weeks afterwards too, even when doing simple things like scratching the back of my head.
I was given some exercises to strengthen and tighten the muscles round the joint and it’s been fine eversince. I do however wear a harness thing that I got from Physio room online when snowboarding. Best of luck sorting it !
deludedFree MemberOTB incident resulted in a left subluxation and a full anterior dislocation on the right. Popped left in myself by holding the top tube and bending down at the knees. A&E Dr used the Kocher manoeuvre for the other – very painful
Recommend resistance band exercises and maybe a decent physio.
Was back on the bike in 9 days.

I’ve been to over ten physios and at least half of them were crap.
danjthomasFree MemberThat’s good. I have an mri scan Tuesday. Hoping it’s a physio job but seen as I’m insured I have a feeling the surgical approach might be suggested. My shoulders have pooped tonnes of time but never this bad…
Don’t want to miss out on another summer mtb. I did it on a skills course to boost my confidence!

Lots of rotator cuff exercises and I’ve been fine for two decades, plus I fall off a lot.

chickenmanFull MemberPopped mine out after an OTB except I didn’t know exactly what I’d done. rode 5 miles back to the car and drove 60 miles to hospital. Was in such pain after 4 hours that they put me completely out; full standing on the patient with two guys pulling like f*** apparently.
I’m a self employed joiner so I took myself straight to a private physio and was very (uncharacteristically) diligent about doing my exercises I was given. Shoulder now as strong as it ever was.cookeaaFull MemberThere used to be a lad who rode Dj up at chicksands who had a bit of a “loose shoulder” reckoned the initial dislocation had made it prone to randomly popping out. I am sure I remember him strapping it up specifically to keep it in.

Like I said, I’m worried my consultant will lead me to surgery because it’s private and that’s how they make their dollars. Although, they have to put me first.
Can’t wait to ride mtb next..

jimmyFull MemberCould be a weak/damaged rotator cuff. Mine used to partially pop out and it was excruciating for a few minutes. Had exercises to do, didn’t do ERM enough so had surgery to tighten the rotator cuff. Been fine ever since but when I do the same exercises that shoulder gets tired very quick.
As above, if you get given exercises do them religiously!

Don’t know why I’m posting this – blame a few beers…..chris85Free MemberI’ve had an unstable shoulder for 20 years…Had xrays and seen surgeon 10 years ago who said I could have surgery on it but I chose not to, however 6 month ago changed my mind went back and this time the surgeon said might be better to try physio instead as the joints stiffen up over time making it less unstable as you get older…still not sure if he was fobbing me off as they are trying to cut down on operations, 😐
NobeerinthefridgeFree MemberI had a bankart (sp?) repair done privately about 3 years ago. Shoulder is now rock solid, thankfully. I got it done through private healthcare scheme at work, but was surprised to see that it was only £700 to get done. If I didn’t have private healthcare and knew that, I’d gladly have paid to get it done myself.

It’ll be surgical if they’re popping out that much and rehab hasn’t worked

Physio only works if you do the exercises and keep doing them. Something tells me that you’re not doing them – it’s the second and third sentence in the qoute box there. Wanting to get fixed – you need to fix yourself. Nothing a physio can do with their hands or machinery can fix weak muscles.

Yah think? I’d say that there’s deffo a rotator cuff problem.
See how your shoulder is getting tired very quickly – that’s it telling you that it’s weak and needs a lot more work done on it by you.

Rotator cuff damage seemed to take the longest.
Physio seemed to help but i did do it every day once i could.
loddrikFree MemberThe thought of the pain experienced in the weeks after a dislocation by trying to lift an elbow away from the body makes my eyes water.
Sometimes just sitting down too fast can induce wincing pain even now whist they are not ‘post dislocation’.
Similarly if I lift my hands right up above my head it still bloody hurts, and it’s been a year ot two since the last injury.

After rafting accident in SA, dislocated shoulder. Next few years would pop out when rock climbing (on hard stuff).. Had it looked at. Turns out, for me, repeated dislocations had torn away some ‘stuff’ in the shoulder (very common). Had key hole surgery, pretty straight forward recovery and physio and back to full strength quite quickly..
beejFull MemberDid mine a few years ago, OTB onto tarmac. Followed the physio to the letter, kept doing exercises for months after and still make sure I do them at least once a week. No issues since.

milko9000Free MemberI’ve done both mine, but never at the same time. Currently on a comeback with my right shoulder for the fourth time I think, gonna opt for surgery if I do it again. Apparently I have a bit of hypermobility in the joint so they want to tack the labrum thingy, had it done on my left shoulder 16 years ago but without that explanation about the cause. Can’t really afford 4-6 weeks in a sling at the moment due to being a fairly new parent so I’m giving the physio rehab one more go.
Couldn’t resist coming back too soon last weekend and popped it while doing a little jump on a blue at BPW (no bigger or worse-landed than several I’d done just prior to that). On the plus side I rode it out one-handed and put it back in myself, so practice has improved things to that extent. Went and did some XC at Forest of Dean the next day instead of the planned DH action. But yeah, it sucks. £700 to get it done private without insurance is interesting, I need to get some research going. My company’s getting us private insurance soon but my experience of such things is that they’ll call this a pre-existing condition and tell me to get lost.

Milko9000 your shoulders sound like mine. Popped out loads but happens last on a drop off landing. Landed well but as my shoulders were relaxed it relayed on hypermobile ligaments to hold them in place. Both popped on landing but one stayed out and led me to a face plant. Was at UK bike skills, last drop of the day too lol!!
I’ll keep this post going and post progress. Sounds like there’s a few of us needed what I’m gonna have the end of this month.. If this happens again after having both operations I’m going pure xc and road.

milko9000Free Memberdanjthomas, did you go NHS? When I had that op years ago I was doing that originally. Was on a 52 week waiting list to see a consultant, never mind the op itself! Fortunately I just scraped into my dad’s “dependants under 21” cover that he had with his job so got the whole thing done within about a fortnight. Not so lucky this time, I suspect, so I’m hoping things might be better.
SuperficialFree MemberI had a fairly similar thing. I’ve always had very lax shoulder ligaments (I could dislocate both my shoulders at will) but I had a snowboarding accident and dislocated the left one painfully. After that, it would keep popping out even on very low power movements. After dislocating it several times swimming, riding and climbing, I saw a specialist and got a scan done. I’d got a Bankhart lesion (presumably from the snowboarding accident) but the whole joint was pretty lax. Anyway, I had a keyhole repair and ‘capsular shrinkage’ and it seems great now. I can no longer dislocate it and I haven’t had any further trouble from it.
I was off the mountain bike for quite a while though which is the downside. Did a bit of road riding after 8 weeks or so IIRC.
£700 my ass.
Indeed. The total bill for mine came to around £3k but thankfully also covered by my parents’ insurance. To be fair, the days of 52 week waits on the NHS are over.

I might get myself referred on the NHS anyway and see how I get on during the wait – but with my private cover coming in a few months I wonder if it’s worth hanging on just in case. The physio said something about if a problem is “episodic” instead of chronic then it might still be covered by them.
bwfc4eva868Free MemberYeah me too. Hit a tree on the mtb in 2009, knocked myself out in the process. Was popped back in under anaesthetic (General) and put in a sling for 4 weeks. Physio for a few months. Does still feel unstable and pops out now and again. Was given the option of surgery or physio again plus injections for pain I chose the physio and injection option. Seems better than it was but I get pain if I’m on the motorbike for too long or try to lift stuff above my head.
I’ll consider surgery if it comes back out again. I just don’t fancy a nerve block in my neck for the surgery.

I wouldnt think that they’d be covering any pre-existing condition.

October is when I think I’ll be ridding next. Gutted.
