I am after a set of disc brakes but not sure what to go for??

Obviuously everyone on here has their own opinions but what is the general brake of choice now??

I like shimano but most places are out of stock

What are the 2010 avid brakes like? as poor as the old elixirs or loads better??

    I have a budget of around £160 – £180 for a set of brakes !!

    what can I get ?

    Cheers

What do you want to use them for? And do you value feedback/modulation or outright power?

really nice and I’ve got 5 other sets of older Magura brakes and had problems with none of them.

Well Im 16 stone so need a bit of stopping power behind me. I would like a bit of modulation but also lots of power!!

    moon on a stick..

I had a set of the new xt on a previous bike and they really impressed me, however i had a set of current slx and the seemed a bit wooden ?

everyone is going to give you a different answer

I had Avid elixir cr and they were fine, but after all the horror stories on here I swapped them for some Hope M4. I found the Hopes wooden and not as positive as the avids even after bleeding

I have Formula The One now, after another recommendation and they are an absolute nightmare to bleed. I have tried it many times, using all the advice on here and there is still air in the rear

Also seems to be a lot of people saying bad things about Hayes, when they are the best brakes I have used, trouble free, easy to bleed and lasted me years. I would definitely have some more

Most of the good brakes on merlin only have short rear hoses which doesnt help really ?!!

priced up some slx from merlin and they come out at £192 quid but are in stock unlike rose bikes

is that good or not ?

I had a nightmare recently with the same situation mate as i need 1650mm length rear hose.

I’ve ended up with a pair of Deores from Merlin for £35 a piece.

I can flog you a Formula Mega rear with 1700mm hose and a Formula K18 with a 1000mm hose for £80 for the pair. Both used but fully working.

Yeah but then they have no fluid in

^^^Dunno what this dudes onabout then .^^^

I’d stick them on your bike as they come – ie euro style, then do the hose switch ..its easier switching when mounted on the bike plus you’ll get the lines nice n straight that way.
