Howdy

Following a discussion on the ctc forum about water ingress into rear brake cables, specifically with chainstay mounted calipers, I had a flash of memory from years back of a company making stretchy covers to put over calipers, mechs etc.

Does anyone else remember these? Know who made them and if they’re still available? It seems a common issue on road discs causing brakes to stop working effectively.

Ehhh? Any ingress would be past the seals as the pistons retract.

Cable actuated brakes, not full hydraulics.

The housing has a downward path from the caliper, so in theory water could go down the cable.

If and when this becomes an issue, I suppose a cable oiler on the chainstay would be a good option – one could drip/spray oil in the housing from the caliper end, then let it run out through the hole in the oiler.

That’s a good idea.

Except any overspray is quite likely. To get on the disc and/or pads and contaminate them. Possible though. I shall pass it on!

Edit: no luck on the lizard skins website by the way.

The issue with these is that they hold the salty water against the components.

Best thing to do is rinse with cold water often. Stop the salt takin hold
