I’ve got some low voltage halogen underlights in the new kitchen and I’d quite like to put a dimmer on them. Their wired into the main light switch so that isn’t an issue.

Having done a bit of research all I’ve ended up with is a load of conflicting statements about the need for special low-voltage dimmers.

Anyone got a standard dimmer wired into a set of low voltage halogens – any issues like buzzing at the switch, bulb failure, etc.

I have low-voltage downlighters with a dimmer. Not had any problems/noise at all.

But not all low voltage lights are dimmer compatible so you had best check with your particular lights.

I did this in our pevious place, worked fine for 6 years.

You can dim low voltage halogen lamps off a rotary dimmer with no problem 🙂 If you dim the lamps by about 10% you can double the lamp life

if the transformer is a standard (wound transformer) type then it’ll be fine. some electronically controlled transformers are non-inductive loads and will kill a standard wall dimmer
