Is Galloway up for re-election?

Yep, my son had an ace day, they came into town to watch the St.Georges' day parade and did lots of flag waving. they also had themed dress and my lad was a knight, along with the all the other boys in the class, no dragons to be slayed though.
Having said that the school is named St.Georges so they always make the most of it every year.

Yep they (7yrs old) had a MUFTI day (red and white colours of the day naturally) plus an assembly. Then in the village we had a fate to raise money for Help for Heroes (Headley Court - service rehab centre is just up the road). Loads of flags in the village and nice to see people celebrating the day without racism and jingoism.

St George is a bit of a sh**e patron saint though, isn't he?
His most famous act was nothing more than a misguided attempt at wiping out yet another endangered species.
I wouldnie be surprised if he had a hand in the extinction of other vulnerable species... Megalania?.. the Thylacine?.. the Dodo?

If you're English then yes you should be concerned!
Posted 2 years ago # -
What is there to "learn" about St George ? ........no one knows anything about him. Even his nationality is open to question.
So the school lesson goes along the lines of :
St George is the patron saint of England, and quite a few other countries and places. No one knows anything about him other than, he said to have killed a dragon. Of course children we all know that dragons don't exists. End of lesson.
Yeah, that would've been useful.

No.
I am going to complain on Monday. These Scottish schools just aren't up to scratch.

Did he introduce the scolding tone to the UK?

Most sources reckon that St George was probably turkish - best fact for to mention to a BNP supporter.
The previous national staint was Edmund king of Wessex who was shot like a pin cushion by the Vikings. Not much cop for a staint either!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Of course they dont exist ernie... the c*** killed the last one!
and then you've got St Patrick, who wiped out the innocent snakes in Ireland... and St Columba... who persecuted Scottish plesiosaurs..
See the pattern with these 'saints'?,
and folk wonder why some of us are anti religious!Posted 2 years ago # -
I agree, I think we should have an English National Day but I don't think it should be based on myth and fiction but rather a real celebration of what makes England great and some inspiring characters for younguns.

You sound a bit mindlessly proud about this.
WTF did the girls do? Dress up as virgins to be rescued from the dragon?

People in glass houses........
I've never really got this whole St George thing. I don't feel any need to celebrate being English. Flag waving does nothing for me.
Didn't even realise it was St Georges day. I did tell my son about Shackleton today though - he seemed impressed.

What is there to "learn" about St George ? .
Good Question
no one knows anything about him. Even his nationality is open to question.
Seemingly everything would be the obvious answer.
I get the feeling this isn't going the way the OP intended.
No need to sound quite so gleeful about it.

if you want your kids to learn something about english historical figures
Why only "english historical figures" ? Why not also about Roman soldiers from Palestine/Turkey ?You sound a bit racist to me mate
I reckon it's excellent that the English have a foreigner as a patron saint.
It's just a shame they couldn't choose one which they actually knew something about.

So when there's a lesson in order to find stuff out, you deride it.
Smart.

ok ill adopt some scots; bell, flemming, watt etc but i draw the line at andy murrayPosted 2 years ago # -
ok ill adopt some scots
Why Scot ? I reckon a proper foreigner was a good idea.
Personally I'd like to see Nelson Mandela made patron saint of England. ....he's a foreigner.
And we know quite a lot about him - so no problems with the kid's lessons then.Plus he's probably done more "saintly" things than St George. And he's been to England.
Not sure how it would go down with the BNP membership though

Not sure how it would go down with the BNP membership though
didn't they have a court ruling against them saying that their membership can not be descriminatory.....so should go down fine then. Mandela in the BNP would make about as much sense as all that "indigenous englishman" knackers griffin comes out with
