I think I'd like more figures than just a bar graph before taking worrying too much about it. What exactly is a "malfunction" here? How many units are these manufacturers selling? How readily are they fixed?
Never had a problem with Acer personally. YMMV.
I recently recommended a Lenovo like this to my FIL. There was a slightly lower spec for about £360 IIRC - all the way up to £550 or so.
Had v good reviews on various PC/laptop sites etc.
EDIT: also not a fan of Acer here (personal experience plus I worked for an IT VAR where the likes of Acer and Dell were four-letter words).

Looking at another dell, my current inspiron is finally giving up. Charging port connection is a bit iffy now. Can't complain as its over 10 yrs old now.

Cougar - I agree on perhaps wanting more data, and it is out there, but I'm not just going off that, in my personal experience working in the IT department at a large College we avoided them like the plague.
We had sample laptops from a few manufacturers to disassemble and examine and the Acer had by far the worst cooling setup.
Although as with anything YMMV, I'm sure there's plenty of happy Acer customers out there!

+1 for Lenovo, just bought a new Ideapad. Was looking for something portable but relatively robust and not too pricey.
Feels nice and solid so far with a great battery life. Old Dell which lasted 2 years was quite flexy in the case in comparison. I suspect the main reason Macbooks etc get the good rep is they have good solid cases to protect all the inside gubbins.
can't see whether it is a 720P screen or 1080P screen - I think it must be 720P as it mentions using an external high-res display at 1080P.
I personally wouldn't be buying a laptop at 720P, especially a 15.6 inch display.
My Sister had an Acer that went kapput, & defied many attempts to resurect it. I like Dell.
Work gave me a Dell Precision 6600 with Windows 7, doesn't seem any faster than my old Inspiron running XP. When I mentioned this the IT chap became quite annoyed, as apparently it cost a packet. 
Only going by the photo but the keyboard looks exactly like a very shit one. If you're not much of a typist you maybe won't notice though.
Comet have some Packard Bell i5s in that price range and a TS11 with the new i3-2310 processor. The TS ones are pretty robust.
