Struggling to source up to date, useful careers guidance for our sixth formers. Anyone in the know got any tips?

Please don’t go overboard with the “are they 18 and good looking”?, move to Swaziland, find a cure for….. suggestions (unless they’re truly funny obviously)

Our careers advice could be distilled into quite a simple website:

    Are you male?

    Yes: Join the Army.

No: Secretarial school for you then, that should tide you over ’till you have some babies.

    Now off you trot. Next.

One of my mates had a brilliant conversation with the careers adviser at our school:

Him: I want to be a doctor
    Her: You’re not intelligent enough
Him: And that’s why you’ll only ever be a careers adviser (walks out)

    He’s now a cardiologist.

CA – what do you want to do when you leave shool?
me – don’t really know but i like computers
CA – I’ll make an appointment for you to see about joining the Aberdeen fishing fleet.
me – ?fishing? what? trawlers and stuff?
CA – You’ll love it, they’re the salt of the earth these guys. Good money too.

(yes, i know aberdeen doesn’t really have a fishing fleet anymore, but this was some rime ago))

Local University? Ours has a comprehensive site on job hunting, obviously more geared towards placement and graduate employment, but could be a good place to start.

Edit: Connexions and AimHigher have now become part of DirectGov.

Online careers guidance = STW, surely?

Is posting on here a career now?

I’ve never had a career before, it’s always been more of a plummet.
