My riding shoes smell bad after a very wet four days in Wales, despite drying them out in the sun today with the inner soles removed etc. I never normally suffer from smelly shoes or feet.

Anyone got any useful suggestion for de-odourising them?

Prevention is better than cure. I always rinse wet shoes in the shower so they're soggy with fresh rather than stagnant water. Then stuff them with news paper to draw out the water and help them dry.

Try soaking them in a bucket with non bio washing powder (and water). Might help.

Good idea, they'd damage the washing machine I reckon.

Dunno about cycling shoes, but this is a common problem with rock-climbing shoes. I've found that a combination of stuffing them with newspaper, chucking a bit of talc in them, and / or leaving them in the airing cupboard overnight all help.

urinating in them neutralises the smell as your wee is acid based and the smell is an alkaline at its base source

bicarbonate of soda – sprinkle liberally inside them while damp, leave to dry out and then shake out – I do it every few months and seems to work.
