My daughter has just asked for help with her maths homework, anyone understand this?

    3x + 6
    —–
    x2 – 4

    Simplify fully.

    I’m rubbish at maths!

What level is your daughter at and does that equal anything in particular?

That expression can be simplified like this

    3(x+2)
    ——
    (x+2)(x-2)

    Which then becomes

    3
    —–
    (x-2)

[edit] I’m assuming that x2 is x squared.

Of course this is still a bit nonsense as you haven’t actually asked a question. What whas she supposed to do with the expression and more importantly why is she asking at 7-45 on a Friday morning?

    Your question is confusing!

    Is that ((3 times X) plus 6 ) divided by (( 2 times X ) minus 4 ) ) ?

    or something else ?

Edit: Ah, bottom is x squared!, beaten to it.

I think you all might be assuming it’s more complex than it is:

    X + 2

    X – 2

For x not equal to +/-2, naturally. 🙂
