Contemplating a new road bike, ca.£1k. My existing ‘starter road bike’ has been commuter-ised (pannier rack, etc)and I’m looking for something a bit sleeker for some ‘weekend fun’. My question is:

    “Ribble or Planet X?” Discuss.

First piece of advice: drop the darkside bit.

Druidh – you got any more thoughts on an Audax bike?

Smee – I cannae really justify a 3rd road bike. I reckon I’d try a 200km event on the Cayo and just travel as light as possible. The Sutra weighs in at 30lbs, so a bit heavy to be dragging across half the country in a day 🙂

    Will I die?

Either. Or a Focus. Or a Boardman, Or a Bianchi. Or a Trek. Or a whatever.

At that price, they’re all much of a muchness. Slight differences in fit, otherwise, they’re all good.

You’ll not die unless you try and keep up with the old guys on Van Nicholas and Time bikes…

sorry druidh, I was being self-deprecating of sorts…

I’ll look at everyone’s suggestions but what do you think to this?

Seems like pretty good value to me, and it looks dead sexy fast too

Yeah – I looked at the PX too. That’s got a slightly better group set than the Cayo and they come up pretty light. Lots of happy customers too. At the end of the day, the Cayo got my vote as (a) you can get it on a “no obligations” weeks trial (send it back and they refund you) whereas it was a stab in the dark for the PX and (b) I couldn’t really get on with the ridicidoodulous amount of branding on the PX. I think it has 10 logos per side….

The Dolan Mythos and the Ribble whatsit were on my shortlist too.
