    Read this
I’m just shocked that The Mail Online is so popular. I guess people like the rubbish they spout.
Personally I’m quite happy that my licence fee goes towards creating a politically unbiased news site so I hope this only affects the niche sub sites and not the news itself.

It’s probably only popular because of links from STW to ridiculous stories which people visit for a chuckle. 🙂

It is a bit of an eye opener, but I think a lot of a certain type of ex-pat seems to read it.

I’m thinking of those people who emigrate then like to do the old country down by sniping from afar or those that aren’t really all that happy with their new lives and seek constant validation that Blighty is doomed or something.

They seem to be publishing a lot of US-centric news stories and US celebrity stuff now too.

    Depressing isn’t it?

As per other posters, I suspect that a lot of the Mail’s high hit rate is due to the absolute bum gravy they spout going viral. I have noticed that ‘Ha ha socialist PC nightmare UK’ threads on foreign forums will invariably link to a Mail Online web article.

Much to my horror, my wife reads the Mail online all the time; apparently only to look at the celebrity stuff. I see loads of girls at work doing the same at lunch time. It’s like a daily Heat magazine.

They’ve also got vacuous self-absorbed hacks like Liz Jones spouting drivel guaranteed to get liberal bloggers’ backs up that drive traffic to the site to read the offending articles.

I must admit if there is a big new story I look at the mail not for the balanced journalism but to read the biggoted comments at the bottom.

So I am helping their advertising revenues by laughing at them.

+1. It seems to be the default for salacious gossip, though I (genuinely) worry it’s the thin end of the wedge.

Did you mean British when you said English OP? Surley not the most popular English language news site? You seem like just the person who should read the mail what with calling the UK england 😉

Ok, it’s a year out of date, but it would still seem a pretty closely run thing.

The Daily Mail website is basically just a gossip/celebrity sheet – the kind of colourful magazines like Heat or Now or More that are at the front of the magazine racks in every newsagent in the UK, it really bares very little comparison to the actual newspaper (this may be bs btw as I haven’t read the paper for years but often “stumble” across the website).

You may or may not like it but it’s a brilliant “product”.

Have a look at some of spongebob’s posts to get the genral jist of their fear driven agenda.
IMO the celebrity stuff’s there just to get the airheads’ attention

That was how the linked website said it, from reading the conxtent they obviously meant English Language.

Like others have said I suspect the gossip and people linking to it. They proably have great visitor stats to market to advertisers but whether an advertiser would want to be associated with some of the stories is a different matter.
