No great point to this other than sharing the experience.

Heading west on M4 yesterday morning about 10miles after the M25 junction, spotted someone on a road bike, peddling like mad on the hard shoulder. (he was going the correct way)

Difficult to see how he managed to get there accidentally and I would imagine dealing with exits was difficult to say the least.

Maybe it was just a “dare” thing, get on at one junction, leap off at the next, who knows.

Anyone seen similar or unusual ?

Apparently its just up to car drivers not to kill cyclist.

Cyclist themselves can carry on in ignorant bliss as they never do anything wrong…

Just in time for a post lunch coffee. Excellent.
    Do carry on.

Should’ve been in primary really, hate it when they hug the gutter like that.

I’ve seen a few cyclists on the A35 near Oxford and although they are perfectly within their rights to use it, it always looks a bit dodgy to me!

Probably a strava segment. Few years ago I saw a lad on a bmx cycling up the central reservation on the M23. Nutter.

    Did someone say “bun fight”?

Not in the UK, but on a couple of stretches of motorway near where my parents live in Spain cyclists are (apparently*) allowed to use the motorway because there is no alternative route.

The most bizarre incident was when we came across two cyclist (riding side by side) in lane 1 as a dog ran around in lane 2, then darted across and nearly took them out as it tried to get back to the footpath on the other side of the barrier 😯

Regardless of the legality of it, I refuse to do routes that would require using those stretches of motorway!

*This is second hand information originating from someone who told my mother. I was initially dubious, but can’t deny that the levels of use by cyclists do seem to back it up.

Hang on. We allowed fried food in the bun fight?

If so, prepared to get battered…

Sometimes foreigners do this without realising it’s wrong.

IIRC happened at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics – foreign cyclists looking for a smooth flat bit of tarmac for some tempo work.

…and back on topic, i’ve seen a few on the M27 and M271. Both on the M27 appeared to be ‘in transit’, ie scruffy shell suit, rucksack, bin bags tied to BSO – possibly escapees from the port! Both times being escorted by police to the next exit.

Most recent was an attractive young lady on a sit-up-and-beg on the M271, she was beating the (near stationary) traffic!

Driving up the M53 recently I saw someone head down on a TT bike joining at the A552 junction. I just assumed he was going for a Strava time. Then again the part of the M53 that goes through Ellesmere Port used to be famous for pedestrians taking short cuts so nothing surprises me round there.
