I enjoy a pretty varied and relatively adventurous diet with Mrs Bennyboy but am keen to put together a nice list of recipes that I can use on a rotating basis linked to my cycling activities. I’m therefore looking to put together a list of interesting, varied and effective pre ride / during ride snack / post ride recovery food recipes that I can use and enjoy during the next few months.

If you have any little recipe gems that have worked wonders in the past then I’d love to hear about them! Any regional or seasonal favourites gladly accepted, ideally it’ll be food that I can happily cook myself as opposed to shop packaged goods. I’m veggie but will gladly hear about any meat related recipes as I’m happy to use meat free substitutes.

    – pre race
    – homemade ride snacks
    – post race recovery
    – post race carb treats (!)

    Thank you!

Was gonna try some of the GCN ones (flapjacks, cakes etc.). Also tempted by some of the gluten free stuff (just because). If it’s good enough for Pro-Tour teams, it’s good enough for me.

Think there’s a thread on here with flapjak/oatbar recipes somewhere.

This is all the recipe you need:

    9oz butter(a block, basically)
    6oz syrup
    6oz sugar
    15oz oats
Good handful of fruits/ nuts of your choice (optional)

Melt the first three together in a pan.
    Stir in the last two.
Put in a greased baking tray.
    Bake for 40 mins-ish at 18deg-ish
Cut into sections whilst still a bit warm.
Take sections out of tray when cool.

    Bananas. Before, during, after.

Although flapjacks are nice, too. Careful when you’re baking them, they go from golden -> burnt very fast!

If I’m doing a big ole ride then rice cakes every time! The home made type not the weird polystyrene things in the supermarkets.

will be the one I was probably thinking of. Look like quite complex recipes.

Thought 4oz butter, 4oz brown sugar, 4oz golden syrup, 8oz oats was the bog standard basic recipe, then “amend” it with all kinds of fruit/nuts/seeds. Method as per IHN’s post, but I’d choose 180C rather than 18C to cook 😉

Saw one on youtube the other day where they make a prune/fig/apricot puree to go down the middle.

Post ride for me is choklit milk, but cherry+banana is nicer.

Has to be said homemade banana milkshake is pretty good, too.

Picked up a copy of The Feed Zone Cookbook recently. Worth a look for this sort of thing.

    Best Post ride snack EVER.
    You will need:
    A pack of magnums
    A Jar of peanut butter
Its possible you will need a knife if the jar of peanut butter is too small to allow dunking.
