For the last couple of years I've been involved with the Community Foundation for Calderdale - trying to give back after they helped my family after the passing of my mum when I was 15. They're a great local charity and do lots in the area that most people aren't even aware of.
This year we're running a massive project to raise £100,000 to pay for 20 young people from Calderdale to be funded through apprenticeships and hopefully into long term employment. We're also the Mayor of Calderdale's charity this year.
The main event is a 900 mile Lands End to John O'Groats ride, coming via Halifax, in April. We've also had local schools in the area covering the distance in one day on static bikes as a group effort to raise funds - it's been great to see the younger kids really get into this and enjoy cycling.
Unfortunately I've had to drop out through injury, but as part of that event we're running a Cycle Cavalcade through Calderdale on 23rd April when the riders arrive for their Calderdale leg.
The plan is to meet at Walsden and escort the cyclists through the calder valley to Halifax for a finish at Eureka. This will be led by The Mayor of Calderdale on a tandem in full dress, which in itself should be worth seeing.
We're hoping for a massive turnout so if any of you guys can join us it would be most appreciated.
Full info on the event is at http://www.cycleforwork.co.uk/calderdale-cavalcade/ and you can sign up through http://www.cycleforwork.co.uk/calderdale-cavalcade/sign-up/
If you can spread this to any other cyclists you know it would be appreciated.
Even though I'm off the main event, donations are still welcome for the team at http://www.justgiving.com/teams/CYCLEFORWORK
