Gonna get a CX but also considering dabbling in the dark.

Shall I split the budget or just get some road tyres for the CX?

    Opinions!?

Assuming you’re not going to be racing: CX bike with spare slicks.

Get a cx bike and either a set of road tyres or a full set of road wheel with casette and chain. Makes it much easier to roadify the cx bike.

Are you wanting to race on the darkside or just dabble and use it for training?

If you just want to train then get some road tyres.

I ride my Trek XO (with slicks and a 53-39, natch) on club runs and chaingangs, its no drawback at all.

    training, not interested in racing.

Kinda wanted discs too for minimal faff etc too.

Is there much difference i.e. is road bike lighter and bigger gears?

I have a Pinnacle CX bike and it’s very like my Lemond – I use the CX bike as a winter road bike and never offroad; actually I’d like to sell it really if you’re interested in it – it’s a large.

Just get a spare pair of wheels for your cx. That’s how I used mine, with a pair of sprints, and two pairs of clinchers (one with 23mm road tyres on).

Mudshark is large 56 or 58cm and do you have any pictures?

    Mudshark,

I might be interested in your Pinnacle if the price is right.

Would the bike take ‘guards and racks? Looking for a real all rounder.

It’s marked as a large which works out as 56 I think – certainly a 58 would be too big for me.

No racks or guard attachments but p-clips would work; it’s this one:

I’ve got discs on my CX bike, and in all honesty they’re not worth it. Add a lot of weight, don’t really take away any adjustment faff because they’re cable operated and to top it all off they’re not very powerful.
