    I’m fed up of getting pinch flats, current average is about one every 2 commutes when off road. I seem to get carried away on a couple of rocky descents even when I think I’m taking it easy. Last time there were 10 holes in the tube by the time I’d stopped.

    So any cross tyres with strong sidewalls? Or do I just stop commuting off road??

    Max clearance is about 38mm and I do a fair bit on tarmac too so want something that rolls ok.

    Ive always used maxxis tyres never had a problem with pinch flats, in fact the only punctures I do get are due to tiny bits of broken glass on the road bits I ride…

    Tubeless works brilliantly on my crosser for this type of riding.
    I got fed up with pinch flats and thorns.
    I use a conversion kit on Velocity A23 rims (which have a nice wide profile, so you get a good tyre shape).
    JRA are very helpful.

    Increase the tyre pressure and / or stop being so gnarr on your CX bike!

    Land Cruisers come in a variety of toughness’s iirc

    I had the same problems – I was running Conti speedkings at 85psi (I’m tall/heavy) which largely stopped the pinches.

    I now run tubeless – Stans Arch Ex with Stans tyres and they’re faultless.

    Ta, I’m running at 75 to 80psi, 35mm width on a variety of tyres and none seem to help. Mavic open pro rims are still mint so don’t want to have to change them.
    Jon from JRA is a mate, so maybe time to see what he can do.

    Put more air in your tyres – I run about 50 -60 in mine if it is rocky.

    Maxxis Raze or Continental CX race I think on mine.

    Edit – Oh, you already have high pressure.

    What tubes are you using? Get ones where you are on the lower end of the recommended widths and maybe consider some heavier duty touring ones.

    I tried stans rim strips with similar rims to Open Pros and while they worked, the did have issues and would leak slowly or sometimes blow, particularly at the sorts of pressures you’re talking about.

    I’ve just binned the tubes that I was using which were a bit thinner. Now on Decalthon specials, 35 – 42mm and they are a bit heavier. Not tried these off road yet so they may help

    Just back from a long holiday in France. All my riding was on 35c SB8s on 29er rims on my pompetamine.

    I had to buy 2 new boxes of puncture repair patches a a couple of extra spare inner tubes 😳

    Half and half thorns and pinches.

    Just riding rocky double tracks too fast and hitting the odd square edge too hard. Otherwise the tyres were great. But think I might have a go at tubeless with them – only prob is the Salsa rims expressly say not for tubeless. What could go wrong?

    I found SB8s to be a bit too porous when used tubeless… Shame as they’re good tyres otherwise.

    Based on my experiences, I’d strongly recommend using a ‘proper’ tubeless rim.

    Has anyone mentioned Schwable Land cruisers yet? 😉

    Cross tyres are generally for designed for riding cross, which is usually on a muddy/sandy/hard field. They have supple sidewalls for maximising grip.

    Have a look for touring tyres designed for rough roads (i.e. not tarmac). They tend to be more bomb proof.

    80psi is almost what I’m running in my road race tyres! 😮

    I am currently using schwalbe marathon extremes for my CX – the most bombproof 700c tyre I have seen! Offroad on it daily.

    for reference, the first 2 mins of this clip is usually where I run into problems. It is much looser and rockier than it was 2 years ago when this was taken.
