What is this “dark web” anyway?!? I hear about it all the time but genuinely have no idea what it is other than what’s been described in reports.
Basically any of the web that’s hidden away (and not on Google) – it sounds a bit sinister, but it can also include totally legitimate business networks (for example).
If you use TOR or log in to the web via a proxy server for whatever reason you will effectively be using the dark net. You are basically using the web as anonymously as you can. IP addresses are pretty much untraceable and your browsing etc cannot be (easily if at all) traced back to you.
There are legitimate reasons to access the internet this way but as per above the media slant that only those using the web for wrong use the dark net just demonises legitimate users.
Lass I worked with said it was writhe in the poor/deprived part of Manchester where she grew up- Uncles etc being inappropriate towards (girls) children.
I say 660 is **** all. Plenty more of them. They just haven’t been caught yet.
freudian slip, or were they all wiggling around covered in oil? Or did you mean “rife”?
I’m a jaded copper and a couple of years ago I went on a specialist training course around the internet, devices etc. I was stunned how rife (!) it is. The police are only scratching the surface and could quadruple the size of specialist teams and still have a backlog of work.
I spent 2 years working in Professional Standards- this was my last job
IMHO his sentence was too lenient; the starting point for a large number of level 4 images is 12 months, where case law has “large” as being something like 50. He had 200 level 4, plus all the aggravating factors of being in a position of trust, entering peoples homes etc. He got the absolute minimum they could get away giving him, with 30% off for an early guilty plea.
Levels refer to the SAP scale from R V Oliver, I’d rather link it than type out on here what it means.
Has it grown since the internet? I say no. Its just provided more sharing opportunities/more avenues to explore. You can’t ‘change’ a normal person into a paedo. Its an in-built sickness.
Back when we were children (70/early 80’s) it was literally hammered into us about paedo’s with puppies/bags of sweets or cars pulling over asking us to get in/have a lift.

True, but is it (in real life) any more/less prevelent now?

I’m not apollogising for them, but there’s large parts of the world where the Ann Summers catalogue would be considered imoral and getting your rocks off from that sort of thing a sickness.
I would agree the internet has made it easier for those that want it to access rather than “turned” people.
I actually find the area interesting and would love to be able to study offenders. Rather than the simplistic tabloid “evil” depiction I think theres a lot more to it, based around things like emotional development. I arrested one guy in his 70s who’d written a story about eloping with a 3 year old and marrying her – no sexual fantasies involved. An otherwise intelligent functioning adult, how or why was that a fantasy?
This doesnt mean I’m defending it or saying they shouldnt be criminalised or detained, just that I think its a much more complex and deeper issue than simply being “evil” or a “dirty perv”.
I’m surprised she’s still the same person, tbh.
they do a lot of regular psych assessment and welfare stuff, and tend to tenure the posts.
that’s not how 99.9% of men gain access to children.
it’s not, but it was how stranger danger was taught to us in the 70s (I’m same age as Hora) which I believe was his point.
People use Tor to buy recreational drugs as well allegedly. Because our glorious government sees fit to criminalise recreational drug use. ‘The Silk Road’ for example is only accessible through Tor. It’s also used for free speech in countries where the internet is heavily censored.
Given the volume of these big operations to catch individuals who download child pornography and the apparent success the Police seem to have in catching perpetrators i’m surprised that these individuals don’t destroy their computers, phones etc and dump them in the ocean. Aren’t they terrified that they are more or less caught if they’ve ever downloaded this stuff?

And then what..? Turn a new leaf?
I suspect that most people who go to such lengths to obtain pornography of this type have serious issues, and throwing it all away wouldn’t be as simple as you’d think.
do the police still go into schools and talk about this kind of stuff these days?
Yes very much so, and teachers do lots of lessons and have lots of training on safeguarding, including using the internet etc.
Village I grew up in Wales we were warned about a bloke, don’t go anywhere with him, don’t go to his house etc. no idea if he was dangerous but we gave him a wide berth.
Excellent news. The police focused on individuals access pornographic images of children online. One doctor had 1 million indecent images on his computer. I fully support the police in their use of the internet in tracking down these people. The police need more powers to access internet / mobile usage. We need to send a clear message that if you do this sort of thing you will be caught.

It seemed like there was one of those blokes in every other street growing up in the seventies. When we were about 10 me and a couple of friends got flashed by a bloke in the local park, we did what any right thinking ten year old would do. We shouted pervert and threw stones at him.

We had that too. Probably just because he was an albino, lived on his own and looked a bit weird. I wonder how many innocent people get accused of noncery because they’ve got an overgrown privet hedge? I estimate one million!
