Im applying for a job with a large multinational. The website states a name which could be either male or female. I have tried ringing the number on the website but it is out of order for some reason. From what I have read putting ‘To Whom It May Concern’ is a big no no.

    I was thinking of putting:

FAO: XXX XXXXX – Human Resources Department

Would this be ok as without the sex of the person I cant put Dear etc

if you know the name couldn’t you put:

    Dear Androgynous Person,

    Giz’a’job.

    Best Regards
    Me

Don’t know if there’s a specific formal etiquette to use, but I’d probably end up putting “Dear Sir/Madam,”

Google the name/title/email address and see what comes up. You’d be surprised who appears in LinkedIn, Facebook etc.

Failing that, just write something natural. I’ve no problem receiving unsolicited emails from individuals looking for work, regardless of how they address me (or my division). What’s most important to me is that their email makes sense and that their CV etc is eligible and piques my curiosity radar. Anything less and it’s either deleted or filed away.
