I’ve noticed lately a lot of couriers charge on top of delivery for insurance. What’s the deal with that? Can they take stuff for delivery but not have any responsibility for damage in transit?

Yes. If you don’t tell them you’re sending a Ming vase and it gets broken they’re unlikely to fork out for it.

Royal Mail’s always topped out at £30 for compensation, too.

There’s normally a flat rate for cover based on weight – £12 per kg or something like that.

In my experience, though, claiming for damage is almost impossible – I only really bother with insurance for international parcels where there’s a theoretically higher chance of it going missing.

I appreciate if it’s something valuable then you’d need to pay for a higher level of cover, I was surprised this morning that there was no cover at all. (Using Parcel Force through Parcel2Go).
